In an exclusive conversation, Daya Shankar Pandey shared some intriguing incidents about being recognized as Chalu Pandey at the most unexpected places.
Talking about the immense love he received as Chalu Pandey, he shared an amusing anecdote: "I was on a trip to Badri Kedarnath last year where I happened to visit the last tea shop of India. The vendor instantly recognized me as Chalu Pandey there and asked if I could click a picture with him holding the Indian flag. There was no reason to disagree. I asked him how often did they watch TV as the area seemed inaccessible to amenities. He mentioned that his whole village admired the show and my character."
"I am often mistaken to be Gujarati by people. Dilip and I share a great rapport, and you will always find us chatting in Gujarati. I have become so well versed with the language that people refuse to believe that I hail from UP and not Gujarat. I have been a part of Gujarati cinema as well with Reva. TMKOC has become a Gujarati show for the audience from Gujarat. There isn't any family that do not enjoy this show at their dinner table," the actor added.
We asked him about what kind of characters actually interest him, to which he replied, "As an actor, I had always dreamt to be like Amitabh Bachchan, but that doesn't mean I could become the same. I believe in being satisfied with what I have and doing justice to the same. That's how I have experimented with my craft, from Lagaan and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah to many more projects in future. I am keen on bringing something out of the box every time."
Currently, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been entertaining its viewers for 13 long years and has earned a loyal fanbase. We may binge on web shows, but watching this sitcom with the family gives a different joy altogether.
