If someone has been elected as an MP thrice, served as a Cabinet Minister for a decade, and been associated with a political party for 25 years — then perhaps we can talk about being equals. You can’t start something new and instantly claim to compete with Smriti Irani.”
Irani went on to highlight the enduring legacy of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, pointing out how the show continues to resonate with audiences even after a quarter of a century. “Tell me one show today that can guarantee a comeback after 25 years,” she challenged. “Kyunki did, and that’s a testament to its impact. It’s unfair to draw comparisons because achieving a TRP of 30 or holding the number one position for eight consecutive years is no small feat.”
Reflecting on the evolution of the entertainment landscape, Smriti noted the changing mediums and audience dynamics. “Over the past 25 years, the competition has grown. We now have television and OTT platforms coexisting. I’ve seen both worlds. The OTT market is far more complex, but television has already been there and done that.”
Praising producer Ekta Kapoor, the creative force behind Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Irani concluded with admiration: “The legacy Ekta has built for herself is extraordinary. She became the first television producer to get her company listed on the stock exchange. So, am I really competing with someone at that level? The idea of competition doesn’t hold ground.”
