MUMBAI: Shefali Rana, who has been a part of shows like Badall Pe Paon Hai, Mariam Khan Reporting Live, Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi, and Sindoor, to name some, is currently seen as Neelu in Dreamiyata Entertainment’s Tu Juliet Jatt Di, which is produced by Sargun Mehta and Ravie Dubey. In an exclusive chat with TellyChakkar, she shared that she found her character in the show very interesting, and that’s what intrigued her about the show.

“In my career, I have mostly done comics and negative characters. This is only the second time I am playing a positive mother. The last time I did a similar role was in Badall Pe Paon Hain, where people appreciated the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law bond. Here, my character is someone who has been tortured by everyone, including her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. She is quiet and patient and adjusts to everything for the sake of peace. Earlier I would play the character who tortured others, but now I am the one being tortured, so this role is completely different for me,” she said.

“I have full trust in Sargun, ma’am. I have never played a character like this before, so that excited me. The script is amazing and very lovely, and the concept feels fresh. In the story, the characters get married first and then go to college, and somewhere along the way they may fall in love. The script will reveal how. It is very different from anything I have done so far,” she added.

Asked if she did any special preparation for her character, she said, “I did not need any specific training, especially for the Punjabi tone, since I am Punjabi. We did have workshops in the beginning to understand our characters, their emotional graph, and relationships. The focus was on how much pain or fear the character carries and how that should reflect in the dialogues. I come from a theater background, so understanding and adapting to the character felt organic.”

However, she confessed that the audience is in for a surprise as far as her character is concerned. She said, “There will be many surprises ahead. My character has a complicated journey filled with emotional ups and downs. Neelu does not want to get married, but she cannot raise her voice against anyone. She is helpless but strong in her own way because her priority is her daughter. As the story progresses, the audience will see whether Heer saves Neelu or Neelu ends up saving Heer. I cannot reveal much, but the bond between mother and daughter will be very emotional and powerful.”
