MUMBAI: World Television Day, observed on 21 November, celebrates the profound impact of television as a powerful medium of communication. From shaping public opinion and delivering real-time news to offering entertainment, education, and cultural exchange, TV continues to influence society in meaningful ways. The day highlights the enduring role television plays in connecting people across the globe and fostering awareness, dialogue, and understanding.

Kanwar Dhillon, known for his impactful performances in Pandya Store, Internet Wala Love, Hum Hain Na, and currently in Udne Ki Aasha, believes that while OTT has transformed viewing habits, the emotional connection that television creates remains unparalleled. For him, TV continues to be the most intimate medium for both its audiences and creators.

Speaking exclusively to TellyChakkar, Kanwar said, “Television audiences will always remain television audiences. No one can take them away. TV is a medium that will continue forever.” He observes that although daily soaps and reality shows still hold a deep emotional connect, the flexibility of catching episodes later on digital platforms has reduced the excitement of appointment viewing. “The thrill of sitting in front of the TV at the exact telecast time has definitely gone down. Now people think they can watch it tonight or tomorrow,” he adds.

Kanwar emphasises that the everyday bond TV forms with viewers is impossible to replicate. “As an actor, you’re seen for half an hour or an hour every day, seven days a week. The recall value television provides is unmatched. OTT shows come and go, but on TV you’re seen daily,” he says.

For him, the tradition of families gathering to watch a show together is still the heart of the medium. “In every Indian household, there’s a habit of switching to a particular channel at a particular time. Watching a show at its telecast time with family and friends is something only television offers,” he shares.

He also wishes to see the revival of iconic genres. “Shows like Khichdi, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Aahat, and Anhonee should return. A lot of genres have disappeared and deserve a comeback,” he says.

Calling television a constantly evolving medium, Kanwar appreciates how creators are adapting stories to suit changing sensibilities. For him, the magic of TV lies in its consistency, its ritualistic nature, and the enduring relationship it builds with viewers across generations.
