Bollywood stars we would love to see in a web series

With the rising interest in the digital platform, here are some of our favourite stars whom we would love to see in the digital space.

MUMBAI: The digital platform is coming of age, and we see many celebrities making their presence felt on it. There are many actors whom we would love to see in the digital space. Read on to know who.

Jeetendra: You can’t be a true blue fan of Bollywood potboilers from the 70s and 80s if you don’t have a favourite Jeetendra film. This is why fans will be delighted to learn that the 78-year-old actor will make his digital debut in daughter Ekta Kapoor’s production, ‘Baarish’ for a ‘short stint’. Jeetendra will Jeetuji Gandhi, a veteran in the diamond business who tries to play cupid between Anuj (Sharman Joshi) and Gauravi (Asha Negi).

Sanjay Dutt: The Bollywood actor who ruled the industry between the 80s and early 90s is ripe for a meaty role in a web series. How we would love to see him relive the magic of ‘Khalnayak’ or ‘Vaastav’. And it’s not like he isn’t open to the idea. When the actor spoke to Gulf News last year, he talked about venturing into web content with his production house. “We are working on a lot of web as well. There’s a lot of content we have in the company which will be a good fit for web,” he revealed, adding that he wasn’t averse to starring in some of the productions himself, following in the footsteps of other screen-to-digital actors including Saif Ali Khan (‘Sacred Games’, Netflix), Abhishek Bachchan (‘Breathe’ Season 2, Amazon Prime Video) and Akshay Kumar (‘The End’, Amazon Prime Video). “I would love to star in a web series as well, absolutely. I will 100 per cent do web if I get a good series to work in or a good character,” stressed Dutt.

Kareena Kapoor Khan: While the rumour mill has churned out several stories that she will soon be making her digital debut, fans are yet to see Kapoor Khan take the plunge like her husband Saif Ali Khan did when he switched to digital for two seasons of ‘Sacred Games’. Even Kapoor Khan’s sister Karisma Kapoor has found success with the first season of ‘Mentalhood’. Come on Kapoor Khan; fans are waiting.

Preity Zinta: After her 2018 film ‘Bhaiaji Superhit’ tanked at the box office, Zinta has been limiting her appearances to judging reality shows, social media and Bollywood events. The actress, who won a million hearts when she played an unwed mother in ‘Kya Kehna!’ is the perfect star to feature in an urban, modern-day romance. Scriptwriters, are you listening?

Juhi Chawla: The talented powerhouse has all but disappeared from films. After a brief stint in a web series with ‘The Test Case’, there was talk that Chawla would appear in a film set for digital release but not much has been said after the actress confirmed the news late last year. While fans may love her as the lovable, charming star on screen, a more serious, dramatic role would really give her talent free rein on web.

Tabu: It seems like forever since we saw the first look of Mira Nair’s much talked about web series ‘A Suitable Boy’, featuring Ishaan Khatter and Tabu in the lead. Based on Vikram Seth’s award-winning book of the same name, the six-part series for BBC also features Rasika Dugal, Vivaan Shah, Namit Das, Tanya Maniktala and Shefali Shah. But what fans really want to see more of is the talented, yet reclusive, actress Tabu. How she would shine in a thriller or a horror web series.

Shah Rukh Khan: Why not, we ask? The King of Bollywood has yet to announce a film since the failure of his last movie, ‘Zero’ (2018). While his production house, Red Chillies Entertainment, has already delved into digital with ‘The Bard of Blood’, which dropped on Netflix last year, followed by ‘Betaal’ that has yet to release, it would be a treat to see Khan spread out his arms in his trademark style for web.

Rekha: Another recluse but a power-house of talent who fans would love to see on the small screen is the eternally graceful Rekha. Fans last saw her in getting into the groove in the 2018 song, ‘Rafta Rafta’, which was a special track shot for ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se’. While we’ve seen her shine in plenty of dramas and thrillers, it would be a treat to see Rekha return to form from her days in ‘Khubsoorat’ or even ‘Mr Natwarlal’.
