MUMBAI: Pollution levels in Mumbai have reportedly been on the rise for the last couple of weeks, with the air quality in the city drawing comparison to that of Delhi, who’s infamous for its toxic pollution levels post Diwali. Since last week, the AQI (air quality index) of the maximum city has been wavering between the “very poor” and “moderate” categories and showing readings that are dangerously close or sometimes even exceeding that of the Capital.
This terrible air quality is not only limited to tiggering illnesses but also impacts skin as well as mental health. The reason behind the declining air quality can be blamed on several miscreants. From oil refineries to garbage burning and the massive number of ongoing infrastructure projects in the city, along with the absence of wind, have triggered an overall unappealing atmosphere in the city.

How does the pollution affect your skin and hair -
While a mask can save lungs, the brunt of the beating is usually taken by the exposed skin and hair. Dr. Jamuna Pai, a cosmetic physician and the founder of SkinLabs says, skin exposed to pollution and dust can get easily irritable, dull, and dry. Polluted air contains increased levels of carbon monoxide, which along with other harmful gases causes oxidative stress and damage to skin and hair. This could lead to pigmentation, dullness, and uneven skin tone. Furthermore, this can make the fine lines quite apparent and pigmentation look darker. Pollution and dust also induce increased sebum production, which may aggravate acne. Apart from these, any pre-existing dermatoses like psoriasis and eczema can also get aggravated.
Ways to protect your skin and hair from pollution -
Dr. Pai recommends to follow a regular skin care regimen to fight against ravages of pollution and dryness that the skin may be facing. She adds, that the first step after morning wash is the layering of protective ingredients. This means sunblock, moisturiser, antioxidants or AHA. During the course of the day, the skin collects excess sebum, dead skin cells, and pollution. The use of a cleanser just before bedtime will emulsify all of these and remove them from the surface of the skin. This is an absolute must-do before using specific skin repair creams and serums as a night regime.
