MUMBAI: We have seen several Real love stories of superstars, there are a few love stories that remain with us throughout our lives and inspire us. They make us believe in the notion of true love and happily ever afters. One such love story is of Bollywood's 'He-man' Dharmendra and 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini. The two went against all odds to tie the knot and made us believe in fairytales and true love!

It was in the year 1980 when Dharmendra tied the knot with Hema Malini in Iyengar style as the latter is Iyengar. Many only know about this wedding, but hardly anyone is aware of their secret nikah that reportedly took place in 1979. Reportedly, on 21 August 1979, Dharmendra and Hema had a secret nikah ceremony.

Today, the superstar is celebrating his birthday, and on his special day, let's take a look at his filmy love story with Hema Malini.

It was in the year 1970 when Dharmendra and Hema Malini met each other for the first time. At that time, the actor was already married to Prakash Kaur and was a father of two sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. The actor fell in love with Hema, but she was initially reluctant to get involved with a married man. But later, she, too, fell in love with Dharmendra. It was also reported that as she was in love with Dharmendra, she refused marriage proposals from actors Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar. 

The two dated for five years before tying the knot. However, things were not that great. Dharmendra and Hema's families were against their wedding as the actor was already married to Prakash Kaur. On the other hand, Prakash, too, refused to divorce Dharmendra. But nothing stopped the two and they tied the knot. But before doing the same, they reportedly converted to Islam.

Hema's father was against their union and when her father died, her mother was also against her marrying an already married man. But the two reportedly converted to Islam in 1979 and tied the knot in 1980. A report in Outlookindia shared a Nikahnama of the two and the same had read, "Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn (44 years) accepted Aisha Bi R. Chakravarty (29 years) as his wife on 21 August 1979 at a mehr of Rs 111,000 in the presence of two legal witnesses." The same was kept secret and it was only in 1980 that they announced their wedding when they tied the knot in Iyengar style.

Hema Malini is head-over-heels in love with Dharmendra and in her biography, the actress had shared that she got attracted to the actor because he was strong and silent like her mother.
