Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is about the iconic Indian athlete Milkha Singh, who made a mark in the international sport circuit with his immense speed on the tracks. The man, dearly referred to as the ‘Flying Sikh’ for his ability to run as fast as air travels, will be brought to life on screen by the talented Farhan Akhtar.
Said the muti talented actor-director-producer, “When Rakeysh (Om Prakash Mehra) told me the story, I decided to do the film in a matter of 25 minutes. Inspirational stories like this should get a good platform. Films like this can act as a trigger for the youth; the story is really a very special one.”
The actor fondly remembers his meeting with Milkha Singh for the first time. “I was overwhelmed meeting the legend. I just promised him that I will work really hard and not disappoint him in any way. I have given all I could for this role and the whole team has put in lot of efforts. We just hope Milkha ji is not disappointed with the film,” he averred.
It is really interesting to see Farhan slip into the character, which in this case is very akin to reality. Talking about his preparation for the role, Farhan divulged, “Since my school days I have been an athlete but my style was more of a city runner kind. The first thing I had to do was change my style of running. The manner in which my hand moves while running and the way my legs should come forward etc, underwent a big change. I had to completely reinvent myself.”
Farhan, who has been into a family of creative brilliance, says that the film will play an important role in bringing a revolution in the life of the youngsters who want to take up sports seriously. “Milkha Singh’s story is not only about his victory as an athlete, but also as a human spirit. The tale of his struggle, his hardship and finally his success deserves to be told. Every youngster will be inspired by the film and we hope that it leaves a positive mark on them too,” he observed.
Echoing Milkha’s take on hoping to inspire athletes with this film, Farhan maintains, “It’s been really long since someone from our country brought back a medal in athletics. We hope after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, young people will realise the importance of perseverance and hard work and bring back glory to India again with their sporting talents.”
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, co-produced by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Viacom 18, is slated to release on 12 July (2013).
