Salman Khan in trouble: Supreme Court overturns stay on actor's conviction in black buck case

Salman Khan

Fresh legal trouble seems to be brewing for Salman Khan in 2015. In a judgment, the Supreme Court today quashed the Rajasthan high court order that had stayed Salman Khan's conviction in black buck hunting case.

In the infamous black buck killing case, Salman was handed a jail-term of 5 years by the trail court which was later stayed by the Rajasthan High Court in 2007 after the actor filed a plea seeking a stay on his conviction so that he could file a fresh application for a British visa. In pursuance to the plea, the conviction had been stayed by the HC.

However, the Supreme Court has now set aside the stay order on Salman's conviction and directed the High Court to decide on Salman Khan's plea afresh in which the trial court had sentenced him to five-year jail term.

The Apex court has also granted Salman the permission to approach High Court if he needs to travel abroad. Delivering the order, Justice Mukhopadhyay said," The filmstar could tell the court that he would suffer irreversible damage if his conviction is not stayed and he is eventually acquitted."

The court also said that the Rajasthan government could file their objections stating that no irreversible damage which cannot be undone would be caused if Salman's conviction is not stayed.

Salman Khan committed the alleged offence while shooting Hum Saath Saath Hain. His co-stars Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam too are accused of poaching near Jodhpur. Salman was convicted and sentenced to one-year and five-year prison terms in separate cases of poaching of two Chinkaras at Bhawad and one black buck at Ghoda Farm (Mathania) on the night of September 26-27, 1998.
