Tanishaa Mukerji opens up on following sustainability in her fashion, talks about the importance of supporting local Indian weavers

Tanishaa Mukerji

MUMBAI : As an artiste, Tanishaa Mukerji has always looked forward to pushing herself beyond boundaries. She's always believed in upscaling and elevating herself in terms of performance on-screen and the fact that she's chosen to do quality projects ahead of quantity has certainly worked for her. Apart from her acting chops on-screen, Tanishaa is also followed immensely for her vogue and fashion choices. She believes in setting new trends instead of following one blindly and the fact that she always manages to blend her own creative flair and element in her fashion is truly exemplary.

Her swag and charm is such that be it traditional ethnic outfits or western outfits, she's a slayer in everything. However, given the fact that she's a quintessential 'Bengali beauty', many people feel that she manages to get the best out of herself when she wears classy and elegant sarees. For Tanishaa, it's not just about the choice of colours or pattern that matters but also the draping where she loves to experiment and bring in fresh style cues for her admirers. However, to top it all, the best quality about her is that she believes in supporting local talent. Being a socially-responsible and environment-friendly citizen who loves her country wholeheartedly, she believes in not just sustainable fashion but also encouraging and promoting local talent. That's exactly why, Tanishaa has made it a point over the years to only wear sarees that are specially handcrafted by Indian weavers. Given the fact that sustainability is truly the need of the hour, when celebrities and public figures like Tanishaa Mukerji lead from the front, it certainly sets an example for the entire entertainment industry. On being asked more about her love for sustainable style of fashion and sarees made by local Indian weavers, Tanishaa added and we quote,

"Well, sustainability is something that I have always believed in and followed in my life. As far as going 'vocal for local' is concerned, these wonderful local weavers, they come from Bengal every year and sell us these incredible handwoven sarees. I believe in supporting such raw talents first ahead of anyone else and that's why, I wear outfits prepared by the local weavers. I feel that the real weaves and the real quality is felt when its handwoven. There are different techniques and mechanisms involved and the love that you feel wearing clothes which are handwoven, you cannot get the same feeling with clothes prepared out of machines. The love and passion for their work and handicraft is felt when it is handcrafted. One of the red sarees that I wore recently is a handwoven saree and the purple saree that I wore on the occasion of 'Bhai Phota', it is actually my mother's saree. Even during Durga Puja, the sarees I wore are from 'Shanti Banaras' which is again authentic Benarasi sarees prepared by our local weavers. I personally feel that the saree is the most stylish outfit that can literally be worn on any occasion and I feel very comfortable wearing sarees. Also for me, when it comes to saree, the draping experiments are important. I like to remain connected with my roots and that's why, I love to wear my sarees in a traditional Bengali style as far as draping is concerned."

She further added,

"I am someone who's very proud of my heritage and I take a lot of pride in showing the world where I belong from. Your outfits are a great way of expressing who you are and where you are from and that's why, I always do my bit to connect my fashion with my roots. India has so many beautiful styles of saree draping and all of them look wonderful on women. The best thing about our country is the diversity. I love to tap that diversity with my fashion. My mom's wardrobe has some amazing sarees and that's why, I have started wearing them again as a conscious effort towards sustainability. I am so happy and glad that all the fashion enthusiasts who appreciate my style quotient take note of all these things that I am so particular about and follow the same.”

Well, kudos to Tanishaa for not just promoting the importance of fashion but also coming out open to talk in public about two very important elements, supporting local handcraft and sustainability. Here's hoping more actresses take cues from her and follow the same to influence others the right way and make the planet a better place to live in. On the work front, Tanishaa Mukerji is currently making a lot of buzz for her lead role in 'Murarbaji' and apart from that, some serious developments are taking place at her end. The official announcements are yet to happen and we can't wait. Stay tuned for more updates.
