Vikrant Massey: Before making it big with 12th Fail, here’s how the actor rose to success from TV to movie and OTT

The actor did not stop and after a couple of more mind blowing performances in the Netflix movie Sector 36 and recently released The Sabarmati Report. Both the movies did well but more than anything, it was Vikrant Massey who received praises for his performance.

MUMBAI: Vikrant Massey has become a versatile actor and has given some amazing performances over the years. While the actor had already received a lot of love for his previous stints in movies, he earned massive admiration and love from the audience and critics for his performance in 12th Fail, a movie directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

The actor did not stop and after a couple of more mind blowing performances in the Netflix movie Sector 36 and recently released The Sabarmati Report. Both the movies did well but more than anything, it was Vikrant Massey who received praises for his performance.

While most people know that the actor started as a TV actor, it is not a famous information that he made his debut with the Disney Channel show ‘Dhoom Machao Dhoom’ which arrived in 2007. Surprisingly, Vikrant Massey is a trained dancer and was a student of Shiamak Davar. He was also the choreographer on his debut show.

In 2008, the actor played one of the leads in the NDTV Imagine historical show ‘Dhawam Veer’. It seemed like there was no turning back as the actor became part of Colors TV’s famous show ‘Balika Vadhu’, in 2009 to 2010. The actor played the role of Shyam Singh, on-screen husband of the lead actress Vibha Anand.

In 2010, he played a lead role in an NDTV Imagine series ‘Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo’. The show was loved and so was Vikrant. The show ran till 2011 and after a couple of years, he came back in 2013 in Zee TV’s famous show ‘Qubool Hai’ where he played one of the leads opposite Ketki Kadam.

Later in that same year, the actor took on the role of a host and appeared in ‘V The Serial’ and ‘Yeh Hai Aashiqui’. The actor soon made his movie debut after his last appearance on TV with the 2014 show ‘Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai’.

When talking about his movie journey, it started in 2013 with the Ranveer Singh-Sonakshi Sinha movie ‘Lootera’. The audience loved his role in the movie and soon once again in 2015, we got to see him in Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ which had an ensemble cast. The movie did great at the box office and Vikrant Massey played a pivotal role which was really adored by the audience, especially by his fans from the TV world.

Vikrant Massey finally played a lead role in Konkana Sen Sharma’s directorial debut ‘A Death In The Gunj’ which released in 2017. For his performance in the movie, he received a nomination for Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor. In the same year, he appeared in the Arjun Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor movie ‘Half Girlfriend’. He also appeared in another movie the same year – ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’.

Things were only elevating for the actor as he made his mark with the OTT series Mirzapur in 2018. He did not just establish himself with one character, as in the same year, he also appeared in the famous series ‘Broken But Beautiful’ where he was paired opposite Harleen Sethi. It is reported that while working on the show, the actor came closer to his now-wife Sheetal Thakur and began his love story. In the following year, Vikrant Massey earned all the sympathy with his role in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s ‘Criminal Justice’ where he played an accused murderer.

While at the end of 2019 Vikrant appeared in another famous show ‘Made In Heaven’, he also reprised his role as Veer in the second season of ‘Broken But Beautiful’. There was also a personal win that year as the actor got engaged to the love of his life Sheetal Thakur.

In 2020, we got to see him playing a male lead, opposite Deepika Padukone in the movie Chhapaak, which was based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

After reuniting with Shweta Tripathi in a sci-fi show Cargo, the actor made his way into the Netflix movie ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’. The actor played male lead opposite Bhumi Pednekar. Once again, he got to play the male lead in another Netflix movie ‘Ginny Weds Sunny’ where we got to see a fun-romantic on-screen couple of Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey.

Before making his mark with Netflix movie ‘Haseen Dilruba’, he appeared in Seema Pahwa’s directorial debut ‘Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi’ and Switchh. His role in the Netflix movie earned him his second nomination for Filmfare Critics Best Actor Award. We then got to see him play the male lead opposite Kriti Kharbanda in 14 Phere. In 2022, he appeared in projects like Love Hostel and Forensic, right before he made his major impact on the audience in 2023. Meanwhile, on the personal side of his life, Vikrant registered his marriage on 14th Feb, 2022. Four days later, the couple got married.

In 2023, he made a huge impact on the audience with his performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘12th Fail’ which was a story based on the real life of Manoj Kumar Sharma who overcame poverty and became an IPS Officer. After 2 nominations, Vikrant Massey finally won his first Filmfare Critics Best Actor Award for his performance in the movie. He then appeared in ‘Mumbaikar’, a remake of the Tamil movie Maanagaram. While this came before his portrayal in the Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s directorial, he also appeared in ‘Gaslight’.

In 2024, Massey played a crime reporter in ‘Blackout’ and then there came the much-loved movie sequel ‘Phir Aayi Haseen Dilruba’ where Vikrant Massey reprised his role opposite Taapsee Pannu. Going complete 360 from his previous performances and showing his versatility, the actor was then seen portraying a psychopath serial killer in the Netflix movie Sector 36. The movie was loosely based on Nithari Killings. As his last release, we got to see him play an investigative reporter in ‘The Sabarmati Report’. In 2024, Vikrant Massey and Sheetal Thakur welcomed their first son, named ‘Vardaan’.

The actor, in his post, has mentioned having 2 more films in his lineup but the fans are hopeful as he has also mentioned ‘...We would meet each other again. Until time deems right.’
