MUMBAI: Anil Kapoor’s Nayak became a classic film in the Indian cinema. Upon its release in 2001, the film wasn't a huge box-office hit. Years later, the film is still liked by everyone due to its relevance to politics. The film that portrayed a TV reporter becoming Chief Minister (CM) for a day, and changing the lives of people has acquired a cult status.

The film completed its 20 years on September 7. But the famous Shivaji Rao Gaekwad aka Anil Kapoor was not the first choice of the director S. Shankar. The actor informed Hindustan Times that he approached Shankar (director) after Nayak was passed up by the Khans- both Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh.

The film also featured the late actor Amrish Puri, Johnny Lever and a slew of other notable actors. Every moment of the filming, according to Kapoor, was remarkable. The actor is glad that he did the film and it still holds the traction and viewership among the people. The actor informed HT that he had no idea that the film would still attract audiences even after ages. He said,“ We had no clue it would gain the kind of traction that it did. I think it’s the subject matter that is just so relevant and relatable. The people, the government and the tensions therein will always remain a topic of great interest and personal relevance.”

The film is known for the commendable performance of Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherji. Anil Kapoor who played as a CM for a day, also confessed that initially, shooting the fight scenes were difficult for him. He still recalls the fight scenes as it involved more choreography and hard work. He added, “ I remember the junkyard fight scene in which I had to fight with almost no clothes on and for me that was really challenging and new.”

Nayak continues to stay in the hearts of the fans. Kapoor believes it is necessary to create films that connect with the audience rather than just focusing on blockbuster opportunities. The actor who was not the first choice gave us the film that would be remembered for ages!
