Vicky had earlier revealed that before Masaan, he had auditioned for Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s sports biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and got rejected for the part. Vicky had almost rejected Uri: The Surgical Strike that helped him bag a National Award for Best Actor. His father Sham Kaushal had revealed that Vicky didn't connect with the film's script at first. But he told Vicky it would be a big mistake if didn't do this film.
