Tarla

MUMBAI: Tarla Dalal, we are all aware of this name, especially all the women. Many of you might know that she is an author and used to write cooking books, and of course, many of you might know her as the cute lady we saw in the cooking show, The Tarla Dalal Show. But, do we know her journey of becoming the famous cook and author that she was? Well, not really. So, when it was announced that a biopic is being made on her, we were very excited about it.

Titled Tarla, starring Huma Qureshi and Sharib Hashmi, the biopic has started streaming on Zee5. So, is this movie as tasty as Tarla Dalal's food? Read on to know that...

Tarla (Huma) is a Gujarati girl from Pune and she wants to do something in life, but she herself doesn't know what she exactly wants to do. After college is over, her parents get her married to Nalin (Sharib Hashmi) an engineer from Mumbai. Of course, her dream about doing something takes a back seat and her husband and kids become her life. However, one incident changes everything for her and after many years she understands that her path is cooking. From starting a small cooking class at her home to becoming one of the most popular authors and cooks in the country, this movie showcases her journey...

The movie is written by Piyush Gupta and Gautam Ved, and it is directed by Gupta. The film very well showcases Tarla Dalal’s journey, but the screenplay and the narration is good in bits and parts. Some scenes, especially the cooking ones are very well shot and narrated. You also might start feeling hungry while watching it, and especially crave for Batata Musallam and Ragda Pattice. However, we wish there were more cooking scenes in the film.

What doesn’t work here is that when Tarla fails and gets emotional, those scenes don’t connect much. Also, the portions when Tarla gets her own show and many other things are happening in her life, will remind you of Tumhari Sulu. Even the narration style looks very similar to the Vidya Balan starrer.

While the film is good in bits and parts, Huma Qureshi and Sharib Hashmi hold it very well throughout. Huma gets into the skin of Tarla Dalal perfectly and has performed very well. Sharib Hashmi as Nalin also is just damn good. Bharati Achrekar supports the neighbouring aunty.

Overall, Tarla might not be as tasty as Tarla Dalal’s food. But, watching it once on OTT can be a good option. To sum up in food language, we would say that the film is sweet and sour.

Ratings: 2.5/5
