MUMBAI :Indian television shows have been a part of the audience's daily lives for a long time now. Over time, the type and platform of content have changed a lot but people still wish to go back to television dramas and call it their comfort zone.

Times have changed but some things never change. We have seen that in all the families of Indian television shows, there is at least one female character that is the elder one and always tries to meddle with everyone’s opinions. She is mostly responsible for creating issues in the house as she is unwilling to accept others’ opinions.

The netizens feel there are a few patent reasons why they act the way they do. First is that they are older so feel the need to be followed. Second, they care a lot about what society will think and in that process hamper other’s happiness. Another reason is their unwillingness to be open to others’ thoughts. One more reason is their ego. They are elder than everyone else and feel bad when things do not go their way.

On the other hand, you will find many times an older male character being supportive of what is happening instead of creating chaos.
A few examples of such shows and characters include Bhavani in Ghum Hai Kisikey Pyaar Meiin and Ninad being the supporter, Baa in Anupamaa and Bapuji being the supporter, Pallavi in Kumkum Bhagya and Vikram being the supporter.

The netizens expressed their views about it and here is what they have to say:

Praniti Rathod: I feel this is quite typical of the Indian television shows that they have the elder female character that is always adamant about the way she thinks and wants things done in a certain way. When someone tries to explain things to her, she will always get angry and the younger ones will have to do it according to her then.

Ekta Sahay: The shows have been going on for such a long time but these things don’t seem to change. Even if the shows try to be progressive, I don’t understand why they need to have some stereotypical characters. The woman has to have things her way and create issues between the younger ones because of her ego issues.

Kritika Mehra: It seems like one old character has to be designated for this. They are there just to force their opinions on others and create issues. I wish the shows became a little more progressive and moved ahead from this. Their reason for doing so is always either the boundaries of society or that they know better.

Preeti Mishra: I have been watching television for so long and this bothers me. The creators of the shows have so much creative liberty to experiment with stories and characters but they always end up with the same old ways. I wish they moved on and brought out better characters.
