MUMBAI: Film critic, writer, and actor Gayatri Gauri made her digital debut with Hotstar Specials’ web-series Criminal Justice, produced by BBC Studios India and commissioned by Applause Entertainment.
Gayatri, who has earlier featured in a TV show named Naina, is also an acclaimed theatre artist.
In Criminal Justice, Gayatri plays an intense role of a mother whose daughter gets murdered. On marking her digital debut and playing such a powerful role, Gayatri shared, 'I think my role was well-crafted. For one of the scenes situated in the courtroom, I actually cried without glycerine and the entire set, crew and director applauded and came up to me to congratulate. An artist just needs to capture the truth of a moment and that’s where true satisfaction lies. My first scene was directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and it reminded me of my first serial Naina which was directed by Imtiaz Ali. I am also glad to have worked with Basu Chatterjee in my early days as an actor.’
Since she is also a film critic, we asked how much she liked her performance in the series, to which she replied, 'Well, an actor can never be satisfied. After seeing your performance, you always think that I wish I acted in another way. However, as I mentioned earlier, I really liked my character, and it shaped up well with the series progressing.’
On talking about her future plans, she said, 'I will definitely take up projects that offer me substantial roles.'
Gayatri’s latest feature film has been shortlisted for the Asia Pacific Screenplay Awards as a writer.
