MUMBAI: Reports state that Renuka Shahane, known for Hum Aapke Hain Koun, shared memories of her first major acting break on the TV show Circus.
Before stepping into acting, she was preparing to pursue a PhD, but filmmaker Aziz Mirza persuaded her to choose television, especially at a time when respected filmmakers like Shyam Benegal, Saeed Mirza, and Kundan Shah were also creating content for TV.
When she auditioned, the script for her character was missing, so she read for the role of Maria instead, and the team immediately decided to cast her.
Interestingly, Amole Gupte had suggested her name without ever seeing her perform, as casting directors were not common back then.

Renuka revealed that during the initial days of filming, Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t fully convinced she would be able to handle her role, since she was a newcomer and he already had popularity from Fauji.
She shared that once he saw her first scene, he approached her and said, “It was good. Accha kiya tumne,” and from there began a comfortable working dynamic.
She admired his dedication, describing how even in his early TV days, Shah Rukh gave more than 100 per cent to every scene and remained extremely respectful to co-actors.
Over the years, Renuka has built a successful career in Hindi and Marathi cinema and also transitioned into filmmaking, while Shah Rukh Khan has become one of India’s biggest superstars.
