Ending the suspense of the release of his ambitious film Viswaroopam on the DTH platform, Kamal Hassan has announced that the Tamil and Telugu versions will be premiered on the platform on 2 February (2013).
With this announcement, the producer has set to rest the controversy surrounding the fate of his film made under the banner of his production house Rajkamal Films International.
Taking the film industry by surprise, he had earlier announced that the film would show on the DTH platform on 10 January, on the night preceding its original release that was scheduled for 11 January. With this in mind, the actor-producer had also made a partnership with six national DTH players and the fee for the one-time show was fixed at Rs.1,000 for Tamil and Rs.500 for Hindi.
With exhibitors, and distributors, who were very apprehensive of revenue loss, threatening to boycott it, the actor had to make a climb-down. According to sources, the rethink was also due to poor response for DTH and non-availability of theatres to screen the film for the Pongal/Sankranti festival.
The Hindi version is set to hit the silver screen on 1 February while the Tamil and Telugu versions would be released on 25 January.
