EXCLUSIVE! Dosti Anokhi actress Sushmita Mukherjee on getting typecast: Of course, there is always a fear but things have change

MUMBAI:  Popular film and TV actress Sushmita Mukherjee is currently seen in Sony TV's drama series Dosti Anokhi.

The show stars Rajendra Gupta and Ismeet Kohli in pivotal roles and the story revolve around the beautiful relationship between these two characters Jagannath and Poorvi.

Sushmita is seen portraying the role of Rajendra Gupta's wife.

The actress is well-known for her roles in films and TV shows and has portrayed a variety of characters so far.

Sushmita is being lauded for her mature performance in the show.

TellyChakkar got in touch with Sushmita who spoke about her character and much more.

How choosy are you when it comes to your roles, especially in a TV show? What made you say yes to Dosti Anokhi?

Since my passion also gives me my bread and butter, I don't have any other side business. So, my choice of roles depends on my circumstances. I can't have the privilege of choosing roles because I don't have another option. I don't have that comfort of choosing roles. Also, there are many things involved when I say yes to a role such as the production house, the character, and the strength of the role, so that makes me decide if I want to do television.

I had almost given up television because it was very stressful, wasn't challenging, interesting, and was very mechanical. Everybody was afraid that the vibes on the TV is very fearful.

But when Dosti Anokhi happened, I had previously worked with Rajita Sharma in another show. She is a very fine lady, writer, and producer. When I was offered this role, I wasn't sure about it. But she explained to me the character and said it is a very layered role. Now I am very delighted to play this role.

How has your experience been with the Dosti Anokhi star cast, especially the new-age actors?

My experience with the star cast has been wonderful. I am privileged to work with Rajendra Gupta ji who is 11 years senior to me and was also my senior in the National School of Drama. Rajendra ji had played my husband in one of my theatre company play. I am working with him after a long time.

The young team of actors in our team is simply wonderful. They are much addicted to their phones and I have also become somewhat like them. They are very nice and well-behaved. They all are very keen to learn, very observant, and extremely professional.

You have played both positive and negative roles in your career. Did you feel like getting typecast at times?

I have not just played positive and negative roles but also comical ones. I have played all kinds of roles. Of course, there is always a fear of getting typecast. But I am at an age where I can play a mother and a grandmother. Then things actually have changed a lot today. In the earlier years, actors used to get stereotyped. But that's not the case today. Women of my age are breaking stereotypes and doing various kinds of roles. It is a wonderful time for me as an artist. I am very happy to be in a space where I am doing all kinds of roles.

Well said, Sushmita ji!
