Indraneil Sengupta

MUMBAI: Indraneil Sengupta is an Indian film and television actor, who is known for his work in the Hindi and Bengali entertainment industries.

He hails from Kolkata but currently, has settled in Mumbai with his wife Barkha Sengupta. He has been a part of innumerable Hindi and Bengali projects (both films and TV serials) and has achieved immense popularity and fame in his career's journey so far.

1. Not many know that despite being a Bengali, Indraneil was born in Ahmedabad (Gujarat), which is his hometown.

2. He completed his graduation before embarking upon his career in modelling. After stabilising his career in the showbiz world, he is currently settled in Mumbai with his family.  

3. In his modelling career, Indraneil featured in many commercials for branded products like 'Tata Indigo Marina' (car), 'VIP Frenchie' and 'Aquafina'.

4. In 1999, Sengupta was a finalist of the Gladrags Manhunt Contest, wherein John Abraham was declared the winner. Following his remarkable emergence, he modelled for fashion designer Rohit Bal. 

5. Indraneil has even worked for choreographers like Marc Robinson and Achala Sachdev. 

6. Later, he featured in music videos like Falguni Pathak's 'Pal Pal Tere Yaad Sataye'; one for the south Indian singer Yesudas' Hindi album and a remix of the old film song 'Koi diya jale kahin (rum pum bum)', which was sung by Asha Bhosle from the movie Bees Saal Baad. 

7. In 2004, Indraneil debuted in Bollywood with the film Shukriya: Till Death Do Us Apart, which also featured Aftab Shivdasani, Shriya Saran and Anupam Kher.

8. In 2006, he made his small-screen debut in the STAR Plus show - Pyaar ke do naam...Ek Radha Ek Shyaam. In the same year, he portrayed the role of Tushar in Banoo Main Teri Dulhann and gained massive household popularity for the same.

9. In 2007, Indraneil had participated in Nach Baliye 3 as a 'Wild Card' contestant with his then-girlfriend (now wife) - Barkha Bisht Sengupta.

10. On 1st March 2008, Indraneil and Barkha got hitched and the duo has been blessed with a daughter - Meera Sengupta, who was born in October 2011. Indraneil and Barkha became popular as an off-screen telly couple from the time they dated each other as they were the lead co-stars in the TV show namely - Pyaar ke do naam...Ek Radha Ek Shyaam (2006). Post-marriage, they again featured as the lead couple in Doli Saja Ke (2008).

11. This year itself, Sengupta bagged a negative role for the very first time by playing the on-screen role of Mohan Kanta (a British Indian army man known for betraying his revolting pro-independence military regiment) in the horror film 1920, directed by Vikram Bhatt.

12. In the same year, Indraneil won the ITA Award for 'Idea Glamour Face of the Year (Male)'.

13. In 2009, he debuted on the silver-screen for the Bengali movie Angshumaner Chhobi opposite Bengali actress Indrani Haldar, followed by Janala in the same year. In both the movies, he played the role(s) of Angshuman. Sengupta received the Anandalok Award for 'Fresh Face of the Year Male' (2009) for Anshumaner Chobi.

14. In late 2009, he portrayed the bold role of a romantic bisexual in Kaushik Ganguly's Arekti Premer Golpo. His love interest in this film is director Rituparno Ghosh, wherein the director starred as an actor for the very first time.

15. Throughout 2010-12, he completely dedicated himself towards silver-screen projects, the majority of which were Bengali movies, including the Bengali blockbuster movies Autograph starring Prosenjit Chatterjee (2010), Aparajita Tumi and Elar Char Adhyay (in 2012). In the same year, Indraneil portrayed a special cameo role in the Vidya Balan starring and Sujoy Ghosh's directed Bollywood blockbuster movie Kahaani.

16. This year itself, he also played a cameo role in a Bangladeshi movie - Chorabali.

17. In 2013-14, apart from his other projects, he starred in the popular Bengali film Mishawr Rawhoshyo, for which he even won the accolade of Filmfare Award for 'Best Supporting Actor (Bengali)'.

18. In the meantime, after featuring in many other Hindi, Bengali and even Assamese projects (both movies and TV serials), Indraneil was last seen on the small-screen in the Hindi TV show Yeh Hai Chahatein, which premiered on TV in 2019 as a spin-off to it's OG and one of the most popular Hindi TV shows - Yeh Hai Mohabbatein.

19. In 2020, Sengupta also debuted in the Bengali OTT show Love and Affairs which aired on the Hoichoi platform, wherein he played the role of Abhishek. Following this, in the same year, he also starred in two other Hindi OTT shows - Abhay 2 (Zee 5) and The Gone Game (Voot).

20. Reportedly, Indraneil is shooting for his next upcoming Bengali project Tarulotar Bhoot, which was being shot in the backdrop of Burdwan's rural areas (in West Bengal) sometime back this February, opposite Bengali actress Ishaa Saha.
