MUMBAI : Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai is one of the most popular and longest-running shows on Indian television. It has gained immense love and the audience loves the chemistry of AbhiRa aka Abhimanyu and Akshara.
Ami Trivedi is currently portraying Manjari Birla, Abhimanyu’s mother, in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. She is loved for her character and performance.
Ami started acting at a very young age. She pursued Gujarati theatre for a few years. She got her first break with a small role in a daily soap Babul Ki Duwayen Leti Jaa which aired on Zee TV.
She went on to do the popular lead role of Kittu in Kituu Sab Janti Hai. She also played "Kokila" in the popular comedy sitcom Papad Pol. She was also a part of Sony SAb’s Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo.
Tellychakkar recently got in touch with the actress and got to know interesting insights about the show and her character.
What is more to come for your character Manjari?
“Manjari has her own thought process. As an audience, I hope Manjari brings some changes in her thought process. I wish she comes up with something that is not very old-fashioned, which today’s audience will be happy about. Manjari is not a villain, she loves everyone a lot. She loves her family more than herself. She even needs to learn to let go of some of her thoughts and ways of living. I don’t know what is coming for her but this is just something I wish for. I feel the audience also wants Manjari to stop being so old-fashioned.”
You have played such a variety of characters over the years. But in this show, you are playing a mother. Do you feel after a certain point, female actors are only offered such roles?
“This is my decision and a very conscious one. There were offers of leads, of characters my age, and even roles of characters younger than my age too. But I don’t have much time because I have a family. On top of that, working on Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai was so different. It is a show which already has a certain standing. This is not a show where I have to wait around for good TRPs. We started from a place where the viewership was already great. This is a different role but I am enjoying it and have no issues. I might do a different character after this show.”
When the track goes in a different direction which the audience does not like, it tends to face backlash. Like recently, when a strong character like Abhimanyu was being blackmailed. What do you have to say about that?
“In a way, it is a good thing because people connect with us on such a level, you feel so amazing. The audience notices every line, every nuance, and every look. We feel so good about it. We are working so hard here. But it is worth it because every effort we put in is appreciated and reciprocated with so much involvement. I feel backslashing to the character is perfectly okay because that is your appreciation in some way. When that backslash becomes personal, then I think people need to understand the line between reel and real. We are only doing what we are asked to do as our characters. This need not be taken personally.”
